History & Origins

Since the Edo period, 'visiting Ise once in a lifetime' was a dream shared by ordinary people across Japan, giving rise to a great pilgrimage movement. Every 20 years, the shrine buildings are ceremonially rebuilt in a tradition called Shikinen Sengu.

Highlights

The pure Isuzu River, the elegant Uji Bridge, and the Sho-den (main sanctuary) are awe-inspiring. The lively Oharaimachi and Okageyokocho lanes just outside the shrine are perfect for sampling local delicacies.

Visitor Guide

Early morning visits are especially peaceful and refreshing. Photography is permitted only up to the torii gate. The proper visiting order is Geku (Outer Shrine) followed by Naiku (Inner Shrine).

Best Season

Visits are welcome year-round. Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn foliage are all particularly beautiful.
