History & Origins

It is said to have been founded by the bodhisattva Gyoki in 729 (the 1st year of Tenpyo). It is known for the legend of Emon Saburo, who, repenting of his evil deeds, followed Kobo Daishi and circled Shikoku 21 times before finally being forgiven, a tale handed down as the origin of the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Niomon gate is a National Treasure built in the Kamakura period, and many of the buildings in the grounds are designated cultural properties of the nation or prefecture.

Highlights

Passing through the National Treasure Niomon gate, you find grounds lined with the Important Cultural Property main hall, three-story pagoda, and bell tower, which are well worth seeing. At the back of the grounds is a cave of stone statues known as the Mantra Cave (admission 300 yen), which has a distinctive atmosphere. The 'Nerikuyo' held every year on April 4 is a solemn ritual using traditional costumes and masks.

Visitor Guide

Get off at the 'Ishiteji' stop on the Iyotetsu bus and it is right there, or walk about 15 minutes from Dogo Onsen Station. The grounds are generally free (the cave costs 300 yen). A course combined with Dogo Onsen is popular, and it takes about 30 to 60 minutes. By car, it is about 20 minutes from Matsuyama Interchange on the Matsuyama Expressway.

Best Season

New Year hatsumode is the busiest in Ehime Prefecture. The cherry blossom viewing season in April, which overlaps with the Nerikuyo (April 4), also draws many worshippers.
