History & Origins

Tokugawa Ieyasu, who died in 1616 (the 2nd year of Genna), was buried on Mt. Kuno according to his will, and the shrine buildings were constructed the following year, 1617. His remains were later moved to Nikko Toshogu, but his spirit is said to remain here, and the shrine is revered as the birthplace of the Toshogu shrines. It was designated a National Treasure in 2010 as a representative example of Gongen-zukuri architecture.

Highlights

The main hall, Ishi-no-ma and worship hall are designated National Treasures, and the Gongen-zukuri shrine buildings with their richly colored carvings are a must-see. You can climb the 1,159 stone steps (Kuno-michi) or take the Nihondaira Ropeway. The treasure hall holds valuable items including armor used by Ieyasu and a Spanish-made clock dated 1581.

Visitor Guide

The main route is the ropeway from the summit of Nihondaira, about 5 minutes (from the summit station to the shrine buildings). The route up the stone steps (1,159 steps) takes about 30-40 minutes on foot from the Kunozan-shita bus stop (reached by regular bus from Shizuoka Station). Allow about 1-2 hours.

Best Season

Spring (March-April) can be enjoyed together with the view of the strawberry fields spreading across the foot of Mt. Kuno. The annual festival on April 17 is especially worth seeing. In winter, the view of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay is clear and beautiful.
