In 1912 (the 45th year of Meiji), upon the death of Emperor Meiji, General Nogi Maresuke and his wife followed him in death at their residence. The shrine was founded in 1923 (the 12th year of Taisho) on the site of that residence. General Nogi's former residence and stable are still preserved in the grounds and are designated Historic Sites of Tokyo.
