History & Origins

Its origin lies in the founding by Saicho in the Enryaku era, and a hermitage on Mt. Hiei eventually settled in Ohara after a long history. Ojo Gokuraku-in was built at the end of the 12th century by Shinnyobo-ni, wife of Fujiwara no Sanehira, and houses the National Treasure Amida triad. The triad composition, with Amida Nyorai in the center and the two attendants in the rare kneeling posture known as 'Yamato-suwari,' is a masterpiece of Heian Buddhist sculpture.

Highlights

The mossy gardens 'Yuseien' and 'Shuhekien' change appearance with the seasons, and are spectacular in the early summer green maples and autumn foliage in particular. The National Treasure Amida triad (made in 1148) of Ojo Gokuraku-in is a must-see together with the hall itself, designated an Important Cultural Property. In the grounds, small stone Buddhas called 'Warabe Jizo,' scattered among the moss, also soothe the hearts of visitors.
