History & Origins

In 788 CE, Saicho built the Ichijo Shikan-in on Mt. Hiei, which eventually became the spiritual counterpart to Kukai's center on Mt. Koya. The temple is renowned for the Kaihogyo, an extraordinary marathon meditation practice.

Highlights

The three main areas—the East Precinct (Todo) with the Konponchudo hall (a National Treasure), the West Precinct (Saito), and the Yokawa area. The Fumetsu no Hoto (Eternal Flame) in the Konponchudo has burned continuously for over 1,200 years.

Visitor Guide

Mt. Hiei's summit is accessible by ropeway or a scenic toll road. Allow 4–5 hours to explore all three areas. Zazen meditation sessions are also available.

Best Season

Early summer for fresh greenery, autumn for fall foliage. Snow can make winter visits tricky—dress and prepare accordingly.
