History & Origins
The founding date is not clear, but it is already listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho compiled in 927 (the 5th year of Encho), showing it has long drawn devotion. According to a tradition from the Yoro era (717-724), a priest cooked steamed rice with a rice paddle (shamoji) and prayed for the recovery of Empress Gensho's illness, and she was fully cured. This blessing is the origin of the lucky charm still offered today as the 'Otaga shamoji'.
Highlights
Rice paddles known as 'Otaga shamoji' are dedicated in the grounds and are loved as lucky charms for good health and long life. The tradition of the Otaga shamoji is also said to be the origin of the word 'otamajakushi' (tadpole). The rare ritual 'Mitori-kui Shinji', in which offerings are given to crows, is also passed down.
Visitor Guide
It is about a 10-minute walk from Taga Taisha-mae Station on the Ohmi Railway. A mail-in prayer request service is also available, so prayers can be requested from afar. The grounds also have a wedding hall and dining facilities.
Best Season
The area around the Korei Taisai (April 22) in spring is lively. Early-summer fresh greenery and autumn foliage also make the grounds beautiful, and a calm visit can be enjoyed.
