History & Origins

Founded in 757 CE by the monk Mangan Shonin, the shrine attracted the devotion of samurai lords, including Minamoto no Yoritomo, who prayed here before establishing the Kamakura Shogunate. Athletes competing in the Hakone Ekiden relay race also visit to pray for victory.

Highlights

The lakeside Peace Torii (water torii), the Treasure Museum, and Kuzuryu Jinja (known for matchmaking) are highlights. On clear days, the combination of Lake Ashinoko and snow-capped Mt. Fuji in the background is simply magnificent.

Visitor Guide

The shrine pairs wonderfully with Hakone sightseeing, including the pirate-ship ferry and the ropeway. The Kuzuryu Jinja monthly ceremony (held on the 13th of each month) is said to bring particularly strong blessings.

Best Season

Late autumn to winter for views of snow-covered Mt. Fuji reflected in the lake; spring for cherry blossoms.
