History & Origins

It was founded in 1895 (the 28th year of Meiji) as a project to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyo. The shrine buildings are an 8/10-scale reproduction of the Daigokuden of Heian-kyo, with a vivid contrast of vermilion and green. The Jidai Matsuri began as a festival to commemorate the shrine's founding in the same year, and its procession through the history of the Heian to Meiji periods is its signature event.

Highlights

The vast garden (about 30,000 square meters) is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty, and is especially famous for its red weeping cherry trees in spring and autumn foliage. The dynamic view from the plaza spreading in front of the shrine buildings, and the amulets symbolizing the four guardian gods placed in the four directions, are popular. The great torii gate (24.4 m high) is the largest in Kyoto.

Visitor Guide

It is about a 5-minute walk from the Okazaki Koen Bijutsukan Heian Jingu-mae bus stop on the City Bus, or about a 15-minute walk from Higashiyama Station on the Subway Tozai Line. Admission to the garden (paid) is 8:30-17:30 (varies by season). Worship in the grounds is free and possible at any time.

Best Season

The late March to early April period, when the red weeping cherry trees in the garden bloom, and around October 22, when the Jidai Matsuri is held, are the biggest highlights.
