History & Origins

The split from Nishi Honganji began in 1602 (the 7th year of Keicho), when Tokugawa Ieyasu donated land at Karasuma Shichijo to Kyonyo (the 12th head priest of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji). The present Goei-do was rebuilt in the Meiji era and completed in 1895. The temple holds precious cultural properties including the National Treasure 'Kyogyoshinsho' (Bando-bon), and the Important Cultural Property Goei-do and Amida-do stand at the center of the grounds.

Highlights

The Goei-do exudes an overwhelming presence as one of the world's largest wooden buildings. Displayed here is the 'kezuna,' ropes said to have been made by followers braiding their own hair during the Meiji-era rebuilding, a testament to the depth of their faith. The adjoining Shoseien (Kikokutei) is an Edo-period daimyo garden, a quiet space that makes you forget the bustle of the city.

Visitor Guide

It is about a 7-minute walk from Kyoto Station (JR, Kintetsu, and Karasuma subway line), and about a 1-minute walk from the 'Karasuma Shichijo' city bus stop. The grounds are open to worshippers freely and admission is free. The gates open from 5:50 to 17:30 from March to October and from 6:20 to 16:30 from November to February. Allow 30 to 60 minutes.

Best Season

In autumn (November), the autumn foliage of the adjoining Shoseien is at its best. Just after the gates open in the early morning is a precious time when you can have the vast halls to yourself in quiet.
