History & Origins
According to shrine tradition, it was founded in the age of the gods and is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines. It has a long history of standing next to Kiyomizudera, and in the Edo period became widely known among ordinary people as a shrine for love and good matches. The 'love fortune-telling stones,' which appear in Heian-period tales, have long been at the center of matchmaking faith.
Highlights
The main attraction of the precinct is the 'love fortune-telling stones.' It is said that if you can walk in a straight line with your eyes closed between two stones about 10 meters apart, your love will be fulfilled. The shrine also offers a wide range of charms related to good relationships, and many worshippers visit throughout the year.
Visitor Guide
The shrine has been closed since August 19, 2022 for restoration work on the shrine buildings (according to the official website, the duration of the work and the reopening date are undecided). Worship at the main hall is not currently possible, but special prayers for good relationships can still be requested by post during the construction period. Please check the official website for the latest information before visiting.
Best Season
Spring (March to April) with cherry blossoms and autumn (November) with fall colors are especially beautiful around Kiyomizudera, and are the recommended times to visit once construction is complete.
