Map

This iconic Kyoto temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the origin of the Japanese expression 'jumping off the stage at Kiyomizudera'—meaning to take a bold leap of faith. The main hall's wooden veranda, perched 13 meters above the hillside, offers breathtaking panoramic views.

History & Origins

The temple was founded in 778 CE when the priest Enchin enshrined a Kannon image at the Otowa waterfall. The current buildings were rebuilt in 1633 by shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, using no nails—a remarkable feat of traditional craftsmanship.

Highlights

The famous 'floating stage' (a cantilevered wooden platform), the Otowa Waterfall (three streams offering blessings of love, academic success, and longevity), and the Niomon Gate are unmissable. Special nighttime illumination events are also held.

Visitor Guide

The approach streets (Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka) are wonderful for strolling and sampling local snacks. The temple opens at 6 a.m.—arriving early means fewer crowds. Expect a queue at the Otowa Waterfall.

Best Season

Cherry blossoms in late March–early April and autumn foliage in November are the most stunning times to visit.
