History & Origins

In 1606 (the 11th year of Keicho), after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kita no Mandokoro (Nene) built the temple to pray for her husband's spirit. Built with the support of Tokugawa Ieyasu and Hidetada, the temple holds many cultural properties that convey Momoyama culture. After her death, Nene was buried here and is enshrined together with Hideyoshi in the mausoleum (Otamaya) in the grounds.

Highlights

The altar and shrine (zushi) of the Otamaya, decorated with Momoyama-period maki-e, are designated Important Cultural Properties. The garden, said to be the work of Kobori Enshu, is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. In the autumn foliage season, evening illumination of the bamboo grove and autumn leaves (lit from 17:00 to 22:00) provides a fantastical view.

It is about an 18-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line, or about a 5-minute walk from the 'Higashiyama Yasui' city bus stop. Visiting hours are 9:00 to 17:30 (last entry 17:00). Admission is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for junior and senior high school students.
