History & Origins

Tradition says the shrine was founded in 757 (the 1st year of Tenpyo-hoji) by inviting its deities from a place in Mie Prefecture. Located in an area that flourished as a key point of maritime trade in Hakata, it has attracted the devotion of merchants and sailors. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is said to have originated in the Kamakura period (1241) and has continued for more than 780 years as a festival of this shrine.

Highlights

Decorated floats (kazari-yamakasa) of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa are displayed in the grounds throughout the year, allowing visitors to see these impressive floats up close. During the Hakata Gion Yamakasa in July, the whole city of Hakata is wrapped in festival fever leading up to the climactic 'Oiyama' race. The 'Oharai-ishi' (purification stone) in the grounds is known as a good-luck charm.

Visitor Guide

It is about a 3-minute walk from Gion Station on the subway Kuko Line. Located in central Hakata, it is also within walking distance of Canal City Hakata. Goshuin and amulets related to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa are popular.

Best Season

July, when the Hakata Gion Yamakasa is held (especially the Oiyama on July 15), is Hakata's liveliest time. The grounds are also beautifully colored during the cherry blossom season (March to April).
