As the head temple of the Tendai Jimon school, which became independent from the Tendai school, it has continued to develop through its long history even after conflicts with Enryakuji on Mt. Hiei.
Highlights
Besides the National Treasure Kondo (which enshrines important Buddhist statues) and the Shinra Zen-jin-do, it is famous for the hidden Buddha 'Ki Fudo,' one of Japan's Three Great Fudo. The Important Cultural Property bell known affectionately as the 'Evening Bell of Mii' is counted among the Eight Views of Omi, and the Kannon-do on the grounds is designated Temple No. 14 of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
