The head shrine of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan, this ancient sanctuary is affectionately known as 'Sumiyoshi-san' by Osaka residents. It is dedicated to the gods of seafaring, agriculture, and Japanese poetry.

History & Origins

One of Japan's oldest shrines, founded approximately 1,800 years ago. It is said to have been established by Empress Jingu after her return from the conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. It serves as the ichinomiya (primary shrine) of Settsu Province.

Highlights

The arching Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge), four main halls designated as National Treasures in the distinctive 'Sumiyoshi-zukuri' architectural style, and stone lanterns lining the pathways create a timeless atmosphere.

Visitor Guide

Conveniently accessible from Sumiyoshi Taisha Station on the Hankai Tram. The spacious grounds are ideal for a leisurely 1–2 hour stroll.

Best Season

Visits are welcome year-round. The grand Sumiyoshi Festival in July is a particularly celebratory occasion.
