History & Origins

Shimazu Nariakira (1809 to 1858) was an enlightened lord known for fostering modern industry (the Shuseikan projects) and for employing talented people (such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi), and he died suddenly at the age of 50 in 1858 (the 5th year of Ansei). In recognition of his achievements, Emperor Komei bestowed the divine title 'Terukuni Daimyojin,' and the shrine was founded in May 1863 (the 3rd year of Bunkyu), with the shrine buildings formally established in 1864 (the 1st year of Genji). In 1882 (the 15th year of Meiji), it was raised to Bekkaku Kanpeisha rank.

Highlights

A bronze statue of Shimazu Nariakira stands in the grounds, conveying the achievements of the modern industrialization he promoted. The shrine lies in a cultural zone adjacent to the Kagoshima City Museum of Art and the prefectural museum.
