History & Origins

This is the setting of the myth of the Divine Descent—the place where Ninigi-no-Mikoto is said to have descended from the heavens. The gorge's distinctive columnar basalt formations were created as lava from Mt. Aso cooled and contracted. Amano Iwato Jinja is located nearby.

Highlights

The Manai Waterfall (a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, with a 17-meter drop), the boat tours offering a view of the falls from below, Takachiho Jinja, and Amano Iwato Jinja are all highlights.

Visitor Guide

Boat tours are least crowded in the early morning (afternoons tend to get busy). The ritual viewing of the inner shrine at Amano Iwato Jinja (application required) should not be missed.

Best Season

November for autumn foliage and May for fresh greenery. Summer is vibrant with lush green hues.
