History & Origins

Associated with the Amano Iwato myth since ancient times, Mt. Togakushi has long been a sacred site for Shugendo mountain asceticism. During the Edo period, Togakushi soba noodles became famous, and temple lodgings (shukubo) developed to serve pilgrims.

Highlights

The 400-year-old cedar-lined approach to the inner shrine, the advanced rock-climbing route along the Togakushi ridgeline, the photogenic Kagami-ike Pond (a perfect mountain reflection), and the renowned Togakushi soba are all essential experiences.

Visitor Guide

The mountain ridge trail (Togakushi-yama) is for experienced climbers with technical scrambling sections. The walk along the inner shrine approach is accessible to all. Togakushi soba is a must-eat.

Best Season

June for fresh greenery, October for autumn foliage, and winter for the snowy landscape (a ski resort is also nearby).
