History & Origins

According to tradition, it began in 1062 (the 5th year of Koho) when Minamoto no Yoshiie, returning from a campaign in Mutsu, dedicated his helmet and bow. Later, it is said, a gilt-bronze Amida statue was unearthed when a hole (ana) was dug, and the name 'Ana Hachimangu' became established. In the Edo period it received the reverence of the shogun's family and the faith of the people of Edo.

Highlights

The greatest highlight is the 'Ichiyo Raifuku' amulet distributed every year from the winter solstice to Setsubun. It is a prayer for improved fortune in money and wealth, and there is a unique custom of sticking it up at midnight on the winter solstice, New Year's Eve or the night of Setsubun, facing the lucky direction. During the distribution period it is so popular that lines form every day.
