History & Origins

It is said to have been opened by Prince Hachiko and has flourished as a sacred mountain of Shugendo since the Nara period. In the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage, visiting Haguro (this life), Gassan (the afterlife) and Yudono (rebirth) in that order is said to complete a 'journey of rebirth,' and in the Edo period many worshippers came from across the country.

Highlights

Gassan Shrine on the summit stands at an altitude of 1,984 meters, where worshippers can pray in a solemn alpine atmosphere. The snow cover is deep enough for summer skiing until around the end of July, and alpine plants are abundant. As the key to the Three Mountains pilgrimage, it never lacks worshippers seeking a spiritual experience.

Visitor Guide

The climbing season is roughly early July to late September (varies with snow). Access is from Gassan IC via National Route 112. Trailheads include Ubasawa and Midagahara, and a lift is available. Always bring warm clothing and rain gear.

Best Season

July to August is best. It is the time when alpine plants are in bloom and the contrast between remaining snow and greenery is beautiful.
