Map

Mt. Yudono is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa (Haguro, Gassan and Yudono), on the border of Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, and Nishikawa Town, Nishimurayama District. Yudonosan Shrine's main shrine stands on the mountainside at an altitude of 1,500 meters, and in Dewa Sanzan faith it holds a special position as the innermost shrine symbolizing rebirth. The custom 'do not speak of it, do not listen' has long been observed, and photography of the sacred body and the interior of the shrine is strictly prohibited.

History & Origins

Dewa Sanzan faith is said to have been opened by Prince Hachiko in the reign of Empress Suiko. Yudono is revered as the most secluded sacred ground of the three mountains, and Matsuo Basho expressed its mystery in the haiku 'Katararenu Yudono ni nurasu tamoto kana' (Unspeakable Yudono, my sleeves wet with tears). In the Edo period many worshippers came from across the country, and Yudono-ko (associations) were organized in various regions.

Highlights

Worshippers must go barefoot and, after a purification rite, approach the sacred body, a distinctive custom. The sacred body is said to be a huge rock from which hot spring water flows, and worshippers soak their feet in its warm flow. Together with the surrounding mountain scenery, visitors can feel the atmosphere of a special sacred ground not found at other sacred sites.

Visitor Guide

The worship season is roughly from early May to early November (varies with snow conditions). Barefoot worship is required, so confirm in advance. Photography of the sacred body and grounds is strictly prohibited. Use the Yudonosan toll road at the foot of the mountain and reach the main shrine by shuttle bus or on foot.

Best Season

The best season for worship is June to September. In years with heavy remaining snow, roads may remain closed even in June, so check opening status in advance.
