History & Origins

It was anciently called 'Koshi no Nakayama,' and after the edict requiring auspicious two-character names it was written 'Meiko-san' using other characters, after which the notation 'Myoko-san' is said to have become established. Because it is a stratovolcano, fumarolic activity continues, and its mysterious scenery has long inspired awe. Hot spring areas such as Akakura Onsen and Tsubame Onsen have developed at its foot.

Highlights

Near the summit, visitors can enjoy a grand view that reaches the Northern Alps and the Sea of Japan. Tsubame Onsen at the foot of the mountain is famous for its wild open-air baths, which can soothe tired muscles after climbing. Dynamic natural scenery derived from the volcanic landscape, such as the fumarole area of Jigokudani, is also worth seeing.

Visitor Guide

There are several main climbing routes, including the Tsubame Onsen course (Myoko Onsen trailhead). The best climbing season is June to October. In winter, heavy snow makes it a lively ski resort. The trailhead is about 15 minutes by car from Myoko Kogen IC. Bringing warm clothing and rain gear is recommended.

Best Season

July to September is the best season for climbing. Autumn leaves in early October are also beautiful, with views from the foot of the mountain.
