History & Origins

It drew attention in 1896 when the British mountaineer Walter Weston introduced the appeal of the Northern Alps to the world. In 1915 an eruption of Mt. Yake dammed the Azusa River and created Taisho Pond. It was designated part of Chubu-Sangaku National Park in 1934 and became a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Natural Monument in 1952.

Highlights

The view of the Hotaka range and the Azusa River from Kappa Bridge is the iconic scene. On the shore of Taisho Pond you can see the magical sight of 'Upside-down Hotaka' reflected on the water. The early-morning Morgenrot (mountain alpenglow) is especially popular.

Visitor Guide

Walking paths connecting Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond and Myojin Pond are well maintained, and being flat, they are easy for beginners to walk. The season usually runs from late April to mid-November. Bears live in the area, so care is needed in managing food.

Best Season

May-June, with fresh greenery, and October, with autumn foliage, are especially beautiful. Summer is lively as a base for mountain climbing, and in May you can enjoy the contrast of remaining snow and fresh greenery.
