Map

One of Japan's oldest shrines and the spiritual home of the martial arts. Deeply venerated by samurai as the deity of war and swordsmanship, it is one of the 'Three Grand Shrines of the Kanto Region' and the origin of the expression 'Kashima-dachi' (setting forth on a journey).

History & Origins

Tradition holds that the shrine was founded in the first year of Emperor Jimmu's reign. The enshrined deity, Takemikazuchi-no-Kami, is a god of thunder and the sword, and was the clan deity of the powerful Fujiwara family. A famous legend recalls the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi fasting here before a duel.

Highlights

The mystical cedar-lined inner approach, with trees hundreds of years old, is deeply atmospheric. The Kaname-ishi (the 'keystone' said to suppress earthquakes), the Mitarashi Pond, and the free-roaming deer within the precincts are all memorable.

Visitor Guide

Strolling the inner approach takes 1–2 hours. The cedar lane in the early morning is especially otherworldly and serene.

Best Season

Late spring through early summer, and the autumn foliage season.
