Naruto Whirlpools
Map
The Naruto whirlpools are a natural phenomenon in the Naruto Strait, between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Minamiawaji City in Hyogo Prefecture. The difference in tide levels between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea produces currents of up to 20 km/h and forms whirlpools up to about 15 m across. The most powerful whirlpools can be seen during the spring tides, and the site is known as one of the world's three great tidal currents.

History & Origins
The whirlpools of the Naruto Strait have long been known to fishermen and sailors, and were depicted in Edo-period ukiyo-e prints. The Onaruto Bridge opened in 1985, making it possible to view the tides from the bridge. On the lower-level promenade 'Uzu no Michi' (opened in 2000), glass floor panels let visitors look down on the whirlpools beneath their feet.
Highlights
Sightseeing boats get you right up close to the whirlpools for a thrilling experience. On the 'Uzu no Michi' promenade of the Onaruto Bridge, you can look down on the whirlpools from 45 m above the water. The few hours before and after a spring tide are said to be the time when whirlpools form most readily.
Visitor Guide
Whirlpool times can be checked in a tide table. Sightseeing boats depart from Kamedaura Tourist Port on the Naruto side, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. 'Uzu no Michi' is accessed from the Naruto Interchange side of the Onaruto Bridge.
Best Season
Spring (March to April) spring tides are when the largest whirlpools tend to form. Ideally, check a tide calendar for spring tide days before you visit.
