The present buildings were built in 1706 (the 3rd year of Hoei), and seven structures, including the gongen-zukuri main hall and worship hall, are designated Important Cultural Properties. History & Origins

It began with Yamato Takeru's founding in Sendagi, and the shrine is said to have later been moved to Nezu in Bunkyo Ward. In 1706, when Tokugawa Tsunayoshi chose his nephew Tokugawa Ienobu as his adopted heir, he had magnificent shrine buildings built and dedicated on the present site. From the Edo period it has been beloved by the people of Edo as 'Nezu Gongen.'

Highlights

The grounds have an azalea garden of about 2,000 tsubo, where about 3,000 plants of roughly 100 varieties bloom from mid-April to early May. During the 'Nezu Shrine Azalea Festival,' many visitors come. Another highlight is the row of vermilion torii gates (the approach to Otome Inari Shrine) running through the grounds.

Visitor Guide

About a 5-minute walk from Nezu Station or Sendagi Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Worship on the grounds is free. During the azalea festival (mid-April to early May), an entrance fee is charged for the azalea garden. Goshuin stamps are available at the shrine office.

Best Season

The Azalea Festival from mid-April to early May is the main attraction. When the azaleas on the grounds are at their peak, the entire grounds are filled with color. The autumn festival (September 21) is also a good time to worship.
