History & Origins
It originates from 767 (the 1st year of Jingo-keiun), when Shodo Shonin climbed Mt. Nantai (Mt. Futara) and built a small shrine on the summit. The Okumiya was founded in 782 and the Chugushi in 784, and afterward the shrine was developed under strong protection from the imperial court and the Tokugawa shogunate. The grounds retain many historic buildings adjacent to Nikko Toshogu.
Highlights
The main shrine grounds have a large cedar known as the 'Matchmaking Sacred Tree,' said to bring blessings for relationships. Shinkyo (the Sacred Bridge) is a vermilion-lacquered bridge at the entrance to the Nikko Sannai area and is considered part of the shrine precincts. The shrine also manages the climbing trail up Mt. Nantai and is known as a starting point for the pilgrimage climb.
Visitor Guide
From JR or Tobu Nikko Station, take a bus to the 'Nishi-sando' or 'Daiyuin / Futarasan Jinja-mae' stop and walk a short way. Visiting together with Toshogu is common, and you can walk around within the World Heritage district. Entry to the grounds is free, but the treasure hall and other facilities charge a separate fee.
Best Season
The Yayoi Festival in spring (April) and the autumn foliage season are especially lively. In summer, the pilgrimage climb of Mt. Nantai (July 31-August 8) takes place, and you can see climbers in white garments.
