History & Origins

The scenic beauty of the Nikko area—including the Senjogahara Plateau and Lake Chuzenji—forms part of the wider setting of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko.' The area has drawn international visitors for well over a century.

Highlights

The 97-meter Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, the Senjogahara wetland plateau, and Mt. Nantai are all splendid. In winter, the falls partially freeze into an ethereal ice formation.

Visitor Guide

Taking the elevator (paid) down to the observation deck delivers a truly thunderous, up-close view of the falls. Be aware of traffic congestion on the Iroha Zaka mountain road, especially during the autumn foliage season.

Best Season

Late October–November for autumn foliage; January–February for the spectacular frozen waterfall.
