Map

Osorezan, in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, is a sacred site where Osorezan Bodaiji (Soto school) stands on the shore of Lake Usori. Counted among the Three Great Sacred Sites of Japan along with Mt. Hiei and Koyasan, it has long drawn deep devotion as a place for memorial services for the dead. Highlights

The contrast between the desolate grounds, with sulfur vents in many places, and the cobalt-blue Lake Usori is striking. Sai no Kawara, decorated with pinwheels and wind chimes, is said to be a place for mourning the spirits of children who have died.

Visitor Guide

By Shimokita Kotsu bus from Mutsu Bus Terminal to the Osorezan bus stop takes about 45 minutes. During the open-mountain periods of the Grand Festival (July) and the Autumn Festival (October), lodging in the temple's pilgrim lodgings is also possible. Admission is required to enter the grounds (normally the mountain is open from May to October).

The temple can be visited during the open-mountain period (usually May to October). The Grand Festival in summer (July) draws especially many worshippers, as the period when itako mediums are said to perform spirit-calling.
