Map

Ryusendo, in Iwaizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture, is one of Japan's three great limestone caves and a designated National Natural Monument. The cave holds seven underground lakes, famous for water of astonishing clarity known as 'Dragon Blue.' In 1985 the cave's underground water was selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters of Japan. The temperature inside stays around 10 C all year, keeping it cool even in summer.

History & Origins

Ryusendo was designated a National Natural Monument in 1938. In 1967 the neighboring Ryusen Shindo cave was discovered during construction work, and academic research has continued since. Diving surveys of the underground lakes have been carried out for many years, and the full extent of the cave is said to remain unexplored. The cave is also known as a habitat of bats native to the area.

Highlights

The third underground lake is said to be as deep as 98 m, and its clarity is regarded as among the best in the world. Lit-up stalactites and stalagmites line the passages, creating an otherworldly space. The Ryusen Shindo Science Museum explains the ecosystem of the underground lakes and how caves are formed.

Visitor Guide

The visitor route is about 700 m and takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Because the temperature inside is always around 10 C, a light jacket is needed even in summer. The paths are well maintained, but there are steps, so watch your footing.

Best Season

Summer (July to August) sees crowds seeking relief from the heat, as the contrast with the outside temperature is greatest. Autumn is also popular, when the scenery outside the cave is beautiful with fall colors.
