Kirishima Jingu

One of southern Kyushu's most powerful spiritual sites, nestled amid the Kirishima mountain range at an elevation of about 700 meters. This shrine is closely linked to the myth of the Divine Descent (Tenson Korin) and is also famous as the destination of Sakamoto Ryoma's honeymoon.

History & Origins
The shrine venerates the Kirishima mountains as its sacred body, regarded as the place where Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended from the heavens to create the Japanese archipelago. The current halls, rebuilt in 1715, are designated as Important Cultural Properties.

Visitor Guide
Combining a visit here with the Kirishima hot spring resorts nearby is highly popular. The shrouded early-morning atmosphere when mist settles over the mountains is especially evocative.

Otaue Matsuri (Rice Planting Festival)
An agricultural ritual of anticipatory celebration held on March 3. The motions of rice planting are offered as a prayer for a bountiful harvest of the five grains.
- September
Reitaisai (Grand Annual Festival)
Held on September 19, this is the shrine's largest festival. It is performed solemnly in praise of the virtues of Ninigi no Mikoto, and many worshippers gather from all over southern Kyushu.
- February
Setsubunsai (Setsubun Festival)
An exorcism ritual held at Setsubun. It draws worshippers praying for protection from misfortune, and together with the bean throwing, people pray for good health in the new year.
