History & Origins

The whole island has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site as a treasure trove of nature. During the Edo period, Yakusugi cedars were harvested as tax timber for the Satsuma domain, and stumps from that era still stand as reminders of the island's logging history.

Highlights

The Jomon Sugi (estimated age: 2,170–7,200 years), the ethereal 'Shiratani Unsuikyo' Ravine (where the forest floor is carpeted in moss), and the summit of Mt. Miyanoura are among the island's most extraordinary sights.

Visitor Guide

The Jomon Sugi trekking course is an advanced route requiring 10+ hours round trip. The Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine is comparatively accessible (about 3 hours). Rain is frequent, so waterproof gear is essential.

Best Season

Spring (March–May) for fresh greenery and autumn (October–November) for fall foliage. The rainy season brings heavy showers but the moss is strikingly lush.
