Tottori Sand Dunes

鳥取県鳥取市福部町湯山View on map

Map

Japan's only desert-like landscape, a quasi-national park stretching 2.4 km north to south and 16 km east to west. The Tottori Sand Dunes offer the closest thing to a desert experience available anywhere in Japan.

History & Origins

The dunes were formed over millennia as sand carried from the Chugoku Mountains accumulated at the mouth of the Sendai River. Long used as a navigational landmark by local fishermen, the area has been developed into a major tourist destination in recent decades.

Highlights

The 'Bachi no Se' ridge (with slopes of up to 30 degrees), rippling wind patterns on the sand, camel rides, and the Sand Museum are the main attractions.

Visitor Guide

Sandboard rentals and camel rides are available. Early morning visits offer the fewest crowds and the most photogenic sand ripple patterns. Avoid footwear that will be difficult to walk in on loose sand.

Best Season

Enjoyable year-round. The rare contrast of snow and sand in winter creates a strikingly unusual landscape.
