Yaegaki Jinja, in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is an ancient shrine with nationwide fame as a matchmaking shrine. Its principal deities are the married deities Susanoo no Mikoto (Susanoo) and Kushinadahime (Kushinada-hime), and it draws many worshippers, mainly women, for its strong blessings for success in love and matchmaking. The 'En-uranai' (matchmaking divination) at Kagami-no-Ike Pond at the back of the grounds is especially popular.

History & Origins

According to the shrine's tradition, after Susanoo defeated Yamata no Orochi, he built shrine buildings in this place together with his wife Inada-hime. There is a record that it was granted the rank of Shogoi-no-jo in 878 (the 2nd year of Gangyo), and it has long been revered in the Izumo region. The 'Camellia Wall Painting' on the grounds is said to depict the grove where Susanoo hid Inada-hime, and is said to date to around the Nara period.

Highlights

The En-uranai at Kagami-no-Ike Pond (the inner sanctuary) is the shrine's greatest highlight. You float a thin piece of washi paper received at the shrine office on the pond, place a coin on the paper, and characters appear. If the paper sinks quickly, it is said to indicate an early marriage or relationship; if it drifts far, a long-distance relationship or one that takes time, and many worshippers try for a good sign. The grounds also have an old camellia tree over 600 years old.

Visitor Guide

Get off the bus from JR Matsue Station at the 'Yaegaki Jinja' stop and you are right there (about 20 minutes). A plan that combines it with Matsue Castle and Izumo Taisha, other sightseeing spots in Matsue, is popular. To reach Kagami-no-Ike Pond, follow the approach to the inner sanctuary behind the main hall (free on the grounds).

Best Season

Worshippers praying for matchmaking and success in love never cease throughout the year. October, 'Kamiarizuki' (in the Izumo region the tenth lunar month is called the 'Month with Gods'), is said to be a special time when the whole Izumo area is filled with the spirit of matchmaking.
