Map

Zao Okama is a crater lake (caldera lake) on the west slope of Mt. Goshiki in the Zao mountain range, which spans Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. The water surface is at 1,550 m elevation, about 325 m in diameter in all directions, and up to 27.6 m deep. Because the color of the lake surface changes with volcanic activity, from turquoise to milky white to reddish, it is also called 'Goshikinuma' (Five-Color Pond), and is a landscape symbolizing Zao.
