History & Origins
It is said to have been founded in 593 (the 1st year of Empress Suiko's reign) by Saeki no Kuramoto. In the late Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori built the prototype of the present shrine buildings over the sea, and the shrine flourished greatly as the guardian deity of the Taira clan. It continued to receive reverence from the samurai and court nobility, and a majestic group of shrine buildings, including many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, has been handed down to the present.
Highlights
The sight of the great torii gate and shrine buildings that appear to float on the water at high tide is one of Japan's finest views, and tourists come from around the world. The Kangensai festival, held in June by the lunar calendar, is an elegant rite in which boats cross the sea while court music is played, conveying the refinement of the Heian period. The deer wandering freely through the grounds are also memorable.
Visitor Guide
A ferry from the pier, a 3-minute walk from JR Miyajimaguchi Station, takes about 10 minutes to reach Miyajima (Itsukushima). From the Miyajima pier it is about a 15-20 minute walk to the shrine buildings. An entrance fee is required (300 yen for adults).
Best Season
It is most beautiful at high tide, when the great torii gate appears to float on the water, so timing your visit is recommended. The combination of autumn foliage and the vermilion shrine buildings is also a stunning view.
