It was founded in 1890 (the 23rd year of Meiji) at Kashihara, at the southeastern foot of Mt. Unebi, where Emperor Jimmu is said to have first taken the throne. The vast grounds of about 500,000 square meters are set against Mt. Unebi, one of the Three Mountains of Yamato, and convey a solemn atmosphere to worshippers as the site of the founding of Japan. History & Origins

According to the Nihon Shoki, Emperor Jimmu is said to have taken the throne at the Kashihara Palace in 660 BCE. Momentum to found a shrine at this sacred site grew in the Meiji period, and it was founded in 1890 (the 23rd year of Meiji) by imperial order of Emperor Meiji. The grounds were developed with the relocation of historic buildings such as the Naishidokoro of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, giving it the dignity of a national shrine.

Highlights

The inner worship hall, outer worship hall and main hall are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and their architectural beauty is a highlight. The treasure hall also holds and displays works by master craftsmen, including a sword dedicated by Emperor Meiji. Fukada Pond and the walking paths in the grounds are a place of rest where the nature of each season can be enjoyed.
