History & Origins

The head shrine of approximately 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan, this site was historically the destination of the Kumano pilgrimage, traveled by emperors, nobles, and commoners alike—so popular that it was compared to a line of ants making their way through the mountains.

Highlights

The vast former shrine site of Oyunohara (home to Japan's largest torii gate), the sacred gate, and the main halls are all impressive. Ascending the stone-paved approach fills visitors with a sense of spiritual presence.

Visitor Guide

Walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail to reach the shrine is a deeply rewarding experience. The Nakahechi and Kohechi routes are among the most popular. Hot spring resorts at Kawayu and Yunomine are nearby.

Best Season

Spring for fresh greenery, autumn for fall foliage—both seasons are perfect for walking the Kumano Kodo trails.
