History & Origins
The waterfall itself has been worshipped as a god since antiquity. It is a key destination on the Kumano pilgrimage route, and arriving here after walking the Kumano Kodo (Ogumo-goe trail) is a profoundly moving experience.
Highlights
The stunning contrast of the vermilion three-storied pagoda against the backdrop of Nachi Falls is one of Japan's most iconic views. While direct access to the plunge pool is restricted, the viewing area at Hirou Jinja offers a close-up perspective of the falls' full majesty.
Visitor Guide
Visiting Kumano Nachi Taisha and Seigantoji Temple together with the falls is the standard itinerary. Walking the Kumano Kodo trail (Ogumo-goe route) to arrive here is an experience unlike any other.
Best Season
Enjoyable year-round. From the rainy season through early autumn, the water volume swells for an even more powerful spectacle.
