This serene shrine stands amid a vast forest of approximately 700,000 square meters in the heart of Tokyo, offering a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. Home to the spirit of Emperor Meiji, it attracts more New Year's worshippers than any other shrine in Japan.

History & Origins

After Emperor Meiji passed away in 1912, a verdant artificial forest was created using trees donated from across the country. The shrine was formally founded in 1920 (the 9th year of the Taisho era) to enshrine his spirit.

Highlights

The great torii gate, the South Garden (separate admission), and the Treasure Museum are highlights. Walking the wide gravel path through towering trees creates an atmosphere of profound serenity.

Visitor Guide

An early morning visit is highly recommended. The Inner Garden requires a separate entry fee. Expect massive crowds during the New Year holidays, when around three million worshippers arrive over the first three days.

Best Season

Spring for fresh greenery, autumn for fall foliage, and the New Year season for the spirited holiday atmosphere.
