History & Origins
It was founded in 856 (the 3rd year of Saiko) based on the tradition that Onamuchi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no Mikoto descended onto the rocks of Isohama. Since then it has drawn local faith as a guardian deity of the sea and a god of nation-building, and in the Edo period successive domain lords revered it, including Tokugawa Mitsukuni, lord of the Mito domain, who rebuilt the shrine buildings.
Highlights
The 'Kamiiso no Torii,' standing on the reef of the shore below the grounds, is nationally famous as a sunrise spot. Many worshippers also come to see the first sunrise of the New Year. Because Onamuchi no Mikoto is also identified with Daikokuten, the shrine is also revered by those seeking good fortune and prosperity.
Visitor Guide
About a 20-minute walk from Oarai Station on the Kashima Rinkai Railway, or about 5 minutes by taxi. The Kamiiso no Torii is on the coast down the stone steps from the main hall. Waves break against the rocks, so care is needed underfoot. Worship is free, and the shrine office offers goshuin stamps and amulets.
Best Season
The first sunrise on New Year's Day seen through the 'Kamiiso no Torii' is especially spectacular and draws many worshippers. The Hassaku Grand Festival in summer (August) is also one of the shrine's main events.
