History & Origins

From the 15th century onward, Sefa-utaki served as the site of the supreme state rituals of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Men were historically forbidden to enter, and certain areas remain protected as sanctuaries even today. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Highlights

The mystical light filtering through the triangular cleft between two massive boulders—framing a distant view of the sacred island of Kudaka—the ancient cave passages, and the tropical vegetation create an unforgettable spiritual landscape.

Visitor Guide

A 15-minute walk from the visitor center in Nanjo City. The viewing circuit takes about 1 hour. Visitors may be asked to observe a dress code out of respect for the sanctity of the site.

Best Season

Open year-round. The early morning hours, when rays of light pierce through the forest canopy, are especially ethereal.
