History & Origins
The founding date is uncertain, but it is said that a deity was enshrined on the cliff before the 14th century. In the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom it received deep reverence from the royal government and held the highest rank among the eight Ryukyu shrines. The shrine buildings were destroyed by fire in World War II but were rebuilt in 1961 (the 36th year of Showa) and stand today.
