History & Origins

This ancient shrine is said to have been founded in the reign of Emperor Keiko, and for many years, as the Ichinomiya of Etchu Province, it was the center of worship in the Hokuriku region. Its high standing as a lesser shrine listed in the Engishiki and a former prefecture-supported lesser shrine continues today, and it is now designated a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines.

Highlights

A 'Nade-usagi' (stroking rabbit) is enshrined in the grounds, and it is said that stroking the part of the rabbit that corresponds to your own ailing area while praying brings blessings. This custom, derived from Okuninushi's myth of the White Hare of Inaba, is cherished by worshippers. As the Ichinomiya of Etchu Province, the shrine has majestic buildings.

Visitor Guide

It is about 15 minutes by car from Fukuno Station on the Johana Line. Nanto is close to the World Heritage gassho-style villages of Gokayama, so a visit can be combined with sightseeing in the surrounding area.
