History & Origins

It was founded in 1687 (the 4th year of Jokyo) by Manko-hime, wife of Nabeshima Naotomo, lord of the Kashima domain, who invited deities from Ise and Kyoto. Manko-hime herself is enshrined here as Shinreishimei Myobu Okami. Since the Edo period it has drawn the devotion of merchants and fishermen, and its gorgeous shrine buildings with carvings, called 'Chinzei Nikko', were developed. Having come through the wartime fires of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras, the present shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1954 (the 29th year of Showa).

Highlights

The group of shrine buildings, constructed along the mountainside, with the main hall, two-story gate and kagura hall standing in vivid vermilion, is a view worthy of the name 'Chinzei Nikko'. The approach continuing to the inner shrine is lined with torii gates characteristic of Inari shrines. In the grounds is the 'Yutoku Museum', which displays dedicated artworks and crafts and items associated with the domain lords. A Japanese garden has also been developed, so the nature of the seasons can be enjoyed.

Visitor Guide

It is about 20 minutes by bus from Hizen-Kashima Station on the JR Nagasaki Main Line. Since the approach to the main hall climbs a mountain path, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Prayer requests such as daily prayers and fulfillment prayers can be made.

Best Season

The Hatsuuma-sai in spring (the first Horse day in March) is the busiest. The autumn foliage season is also beautiful against the vermilion shrine buildings, and worshippers never cease throughout the year.
