History & Origins

The group of lakes and ponds is presumed to have formed when the Noshiro earthquake of 1704 caused Mt. Kuzure to collapse and dam the river. The name 'Juniko' (Twelve Lakes) is said to derive from the fact that, looking down from Okuzure, the number of lakes appears to be twelve. With the registration of the Shirakami Mountains as a World Heritage site (1993), it became widely known as a scenic spot visited by tourists from Japan and abroad.

Highlights

Aoike is highly transparent, characterized by a clear blue through which you can see the bottom. On clear days, the scattering of sunlight makes it shine a deep cobalt blue, and it is popular as a photogenic spot. Nearby is also a white rock wall called Nihon Canyon, offering varied scenery.

Visitor Guide

Aoike is about a 15-minute walk along a path from the Oku-Juniko bus stop. There are slippery places, so visiting in comfortable shoes is recommended. Bus service is increased in summer, but on holidays it is crowded, so a morning visit is recommended.

Best Season

May, with fresh greenery, and October, with autumn foliage, are especially beautiful, when the colors of the beech forest and the lake surface form a splendid contrast.
