History & Origins

The heart of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Oirase Gorge gained wide recognition for its scenic beauty from the Meiji period onward. It is also associated with the celebrated Buddhist nun and novelist Jakucho Setouchi.

Highlights

Stretching 14 km, the gorge is dotted with spectacular sights: the Asura-no-Nagare rapids, Kumoi Falls, and Choushiootaki Falls, among many others. A well-maintained riverside walking trail makes it easy to explore on foot.

Visitor Guide

The full course (14 km) takes 3–4 hours. Most visitors take a bus to one end and walk in one direction. Early morning, when mist floats through the gorge, is an especially magical experience.

Best Season

May for fresh greenery and late October to early November for autumn foliage at its peak.
