History & Origins
Recognized as a World Heritage Site for its original, undisturbed beech forests—unchanged by human hands. This is a sanctuary of Tohoku, where the traditional matagi hunting culture still lives on. It is a vital habitat for rare species such as the golden eagle and the black woodpecker.
Highlights
The Juniko Lakes (including the mysterious Aoike 'Blue Pond' and Wakitsubo-no-ike), the three-tiered Anmon Falls, and the hiking trails through the beech forest are the main draws.
Visitor Guide
Entry into the core zone is strictly controlled (special permission required). However, the Juniko and Anmon areas offer accessible, well-developed courses for general visitors. Bear bells are essential—bears inhabit the area.
Best Season
June for vibrant fresh greenery and October for spectacular autumn foliage.
