History & Origins
Known as a 'dragon cave' (ryuketsu) since the Nara period, this site was used by Kukai and many other eminent monks for rain-summoning rituals. It has deep ties to the nearby Muroji Temple and a rich history of syncretic Buddhist-Shinto practice.
Highlights
The Kissho Ryuketsu (a 15-minute walk from the main shrine), the Ama-no-Iwato (a massive sacred boulder near the cave), and the towering cedar tree behind the main hall are the key sights.
Visitor Guide
A visit combined with nearby Muroji Temple is the typical itinerary. The path to the dragon cave is maintained but includes some steep sections. Note that photography is prohibited in certain areas.
Best Season
Spring for fresh greenery and autumn for fall foliage. The atmosphere after rain is especially mysterious and ethereal.
